Implementing the Report

What is the Glenn Institute Doing?

The John Glenn Institute is sponsoring a series of initiatives, both local and national, to extend service-learning opportunities to every student. The OHIO Bicentennial Schools Project joins middle schools and high schools from throughout Ohio in service-learning projects focused on the state's 2003 bicentennial. Project Polaris, a network of leading service-learning schools nationwide, will provide opportunities for schools to share service-learning projects and to obtain recognition for their outstanding work. And the Service-Learning Schools Initiative, sponsored by the KnowledgeWorks Foundation and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, will create curriculum materials for a series of small urban high schools focused on service-learning. Service-learning will draw together all aspects of learning at these high schools, giving students new opportunities to develop both leadership and academic skills.

What can you do?

Students, teachers, parents, administrators, school board members, and community members can all advocate for the creation of high-quality service-learning projects. Read the report from the National Commission on Service-Learning or view the video. Educate yourself about service-learning by gathering information from others. If you have participated in a successful service-learning project, tell your story to people in your school and community. Form partnerships with others: good service-learning flourishes when students, teachers, and community members all work together with the support of parents, administrators, and school board members. Finally, support service-learning with strong policies, administrative flexibility, financial commitments, and professional development. Working together, we can create better students and citizens through service-learning.
