The
W.K. Kellogg
Foundation, together with the John Glenn
Institute for Public Service and Public
Policy, established the National Commission
on Service-Learning in 2000. Chaired by
Senator John Glenn, the 18-member
Commission explored the power of service-learning
through meetings
and site
visits to schools. In January 2002,
the Commission issued its final report,
challenging the country to ensure that every
student participates in a high-quality service-learning
experience every year from kindergarten
through high school.
Service-learning is an educational
strategy that combines community service
with the classroom curriculum. Service-learning
engages students, increases school attendance,
improves learning, and enhances civic participation.
The John Glenn Institute has made service-learning
a key component of its civic engagement
initiatives.
